Lives Brought to Life

Can sound transgress
From the mouth of a crying
Baby to the deaf ears
of a father’s deep slumber?
Does a physicist consider
wavelengths, its particle matter
shooting through the walls of air,
sound? Is the muted silence of
such deafness truly “dumb”?
Can a father fear the death
of his son, when that son
has not yet come into existence?
And upon that moment when a son
gazes into the face of his progenitor
can a son fear for his father’s life…
David S. Cho was born and raised in the Chicago area, along with his brother and extended family, the proud children of Korean immigrants in the early 70s. He holds a BA from the University of Illinois, MFA, and MA from Purdue University, an MAT and Ph.D. from the University of Washington, and has taught in West Lafayette and Crawfordsville, Indiana; Chicago; and Seattle and Tacoma, Washington. He now serves as the director of the Office of Multicultural Development at Wheaton College.

When in love I melt into yellow,
blend in with every light to become
the most luminous apparition.
You’ve come disguised, hair
upswept, eyes two shades
murkier than petroleum,
a face I’ve never seen but know
in-the-gut-of-me, I seem born
from it, but in mirroring honesty
I often fancy you
are someone else, I prefer
this, realizing how lacking
you are, I can be happy
with a stranger moon.

His poems have appeared in the Academy of American Poets’ Poem-a-Day, jubilat, Orion, Painted Bride Quarterly, and Salt Hill. He is the cofounder of Kundiman, a nonprofit organization serving Asian American writers. He lives in Queens, New York, with his husband.
