“I’ve heard that some volcanic eruptions are soft with oozing streams of lava dancing down the side of the volcano like a Las Vegas chorus line. My father’s eruptions were quick, like bricks being thrown through a window.” Denise Tolan’s memoir-in-essays traces the legacy of violence in an Italian American family, showing how abuse reverberates both in the body and mind and how everything is connected through literal and metaphorical blood...

The CavanKerry family is saddened to learn of the loss of beloved poet, educator, and all-around wonderful human being, Maureen Seaton. We had the honor of publishing Maureen’s poetry collection, Sweet World, in 2019, and found her book’s description to be a perfect encapsulation of who she was and how she lived:
Sweet World reveals a 21st century life in the midst of an epidemic. It’s not about hating, battling, or even ultimately surviving the ravages of the epidemic as much as it is an homage to a life that continues even as the illness exists within the fabric of the body—the body, which is not victim, but vehicle for love, light, and growth. It is about a cease-fire with the disease while the soul steps up and takes the lead. Simply put, it’s about the challenges and ultimate joys of one woman’s life as she recreates herself in a time of breast cancer.
Even amidst the worst of her illness, she sought to offer her guidance, expertise, and kindness to various writers and communities in need and did so with grace, humor, and compassion. She was a truly magnanimous individual, and she will be dearly missed.
